Too Clever By Half - Director

New York

Cherry Lane Theater

Too Clever By Half, directed by Vasanth J. Santosham, marked the U.S. premiere of Studio Six Theater Company at the 2007 New York International Fringe Festival. Adapted from Aleksandr Ostrovsky’s 1868 comedy Diary of a Scoundrel, the production introduced American audiences to Studio Six—an ensemble of actors trained at Moscow’s renowned Art Theater School. Santosham’s staging, grounded in rigorous Russian technique and buoyed by sharp wit, brought new immediacy and physical vibrancy to Ostrovsky’s biting social satire. As one reviewer noted, the show was “a comic explosion of energy and intelligence—performed with precision, charm, and remarkable ensemble unity.” This acclaimed debut announced Studio Six as a daring new voice dedicated to reimagining classic works for a contemporary American stage.
